Retention marketing

Retention Marketing, Explained

Retention marketing is a system, not a discount code. Most brands treat it as an occasional offer to a lapsed list. We treat it as infrastructure: clean data, behavioural segments, and flows that fire on their own across WhatsApp, email and SMS.

The framework

How we build a retention marketing programme

01

Measure honestly

Retention rate, repeat purchase rate, time between orders and revenue per customer — established as a baseline before anything is changed, so improvement is provable.

02

Segment on behaviour

RFM segments from real order history: new, active, at-risk, lapsed and best customers. Each gets a different message, and some get none at all.

03

Fix the leak first

The gap between purchase one and purchase two is where most revenue is lost. We build there before touching anything else.

04

Automate, then compound

Once the core flows run themselves, we layer replenishment timing, loyalty and referral on top.

Common questions

Retention marketing FAQs

What is retention marketing?

Marketing aimed at customers you already have, to make them buy again, buy more, or stay subscribed — rather than at strangers who have never bought. It is measured in repeat purchase rate, retention rate and customer lifetime value, not in reach.

How is it different from CRM?

CRM is the system of record; retention marketing is what you do with it. The CRM stores who bought what and when. Retention marketing turns that into a message that arrives at the right moment. One without the other is either a dead database or guesswork.

What is a good customer retention rate?

It depends entirely on category and purchase cycle, so a cross-industry benchmark is close to meaningless. The number that matters is your own rate measured consistently over time, and whether it is moving up. Our calculator works out your current rate.

How quickly does retention marketing show results?

Cart recovery and post-purchase flows typically show revenue within the first few weeks because they act on customers who are already mid-intent. Winback and lifetime value gains take a full purchase cycle or two to read properly — for many categories that means one to two quarters.
